Anne Carothers, Painter

Anne Carothers is an artist absorbed with the quest to paint the subjects surrounding her life as a Southerner. She has an affinity for the culture’s woods, crops, history, spirituality, and its people, so those roots are the source of much of her subject matter. Her quest is for the significance of those dynamic forms in the larger scheme of life. From her studio in the mountains of Beersheba Springs, Tennessee, she has saturated her oil paintings with the colors that reflect her emotions surrounding the focus of her works. From the rich hues of the shadows to the perspectives of people and nature, her work is an exploration of the questions about the spiritual nature of all of creation.

Anne has exhibited widely throughout the southern states in solo shows, and her work had been purchased by both colleges and private collectors. She has received numerous awards, including the ADSO Southeast Regional Juried Fine Arts Show two consecutive years, and the Central South Art Exhibition. Cynthia Hollis, director of the Mary Brogan Museum of Art and Science in Tallahassee, Florida says this about Anne’s first place award winning painting, “Anne Carothers’ painting ‘Tree of Good and Evil’ displays a high level of technical skill and aesthetic sensitivity. Beyond these obvious accomplishments, Carothers’ painting has a valuable underlying social commentary that adds to the importance of the work.”

Anne is blessed with a supportive family, and loves to read, scuba dive, hike, play the piano, and teach art to adults and children. She has owned and operated a photo finishing business and a Heavenly Ham store, imported handicrafts from women’s cooperatives in Bangladesh, planted and sold over 200,000 gladiolas, taught piano and children’s choirs for 28 years, and worked for the Arts in every community where she has lived. The eclectic experiences in her life have served to enrich her paintings with fresh visions exposing her joy for life. She approaches each canvas with the same sense of adventure that she has for life: the process is an act of discovery.
